From dunes to gorges
Seven days across the great landscapes of the south: the sea of sand, gorges cut into the rock, and the earthen ksour of the valleys.
The regions this raid travels through.
Arrival in the south
Arrive in the south, then drop down a long palm-grove corridor, through an oasis town, as the reg opens onto a great dune wall. First night bivouacked at the foot of the sands.
A day in the dunes
A day at the heart of the erg: dune ridges, sunrise over the sea of sand, shifting light from morning to evening and mint tea atop a dune. A second night under the stars.
The precise GPS track and our partner campsites: in the route book (on request).Souk and fossils
Piste out to a former caravan capital with its great souk at the desert's edge, then a town known for its marine fossils. Back to the bivouac.
The long crossing
The longest crossing: palm groves then hamada as far as the eye can see, to a mountain oasis. Night at the foot of limestone gorges — 300 m walls squeezed into a ten-metre corridor.
Between the gorges
A short, high-value stage: plateau tracks between the two gorges, a genuine rocky off-road section. Then a valley of rose fields and a second set of gorges, with their famous switchbacks. Night above the river.
East through the oases
East through the oases, fortified villages along the oued, toward a great river basin: ochre plateaus, wide open space and flowing tracks. Last night before the return.
Return
A loop of the valley and its dam. End of the expedition.
